Cyprus Supreme Court Rejects Appeal in Limassol Espionage Case Over Evidence Handling

The Supreme Court of Cyprus has unanimously dismissed an appeal by a Limassol man suspected of espionage, rejecting claims of unlawful police access to his electronic devices before a warrant was issued. The man was arrested after evidence placed him near British military bases carrying a large camera and multiple mobile phones.

Police seized phones, a laptop, and camera equipment from his flat, discovering numerous photographs and videos of military installations. The appellant argued that police accessed data on his devices before obtaining a court warrant on June 25, 2025, attempting to retroactively legitimize the search. However, the Supreme Court found no evidence that police had accessed private communications unlawfully, as the forensic copying and analysis of data did not constitute access to protected "private communication content."

The court also upheld a lower court ruling that thoroughly considered proportionality and found no legal grounds to grant the appeal. The verdict confirms that the evidence handling fell within legal boundaries, supporting ongoing investigations related to anti-terrorism and espionage allegations.
