Global Air Passenger Demand Declines 0.8% in August 2026 Amid Middle East Contraction

Global air passenger demand decreased by 0.8% year-on-year in August 2026, as reported by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The sharp decline was primarily due to a 14.6% drop in demand among Middle Eastern carriers, reversing a prior recovery trend. Excluding the Middle East, total passenger demand actually grew by 0.6%. Overall capacity increased by 0.3%, while the global passenger load factor fell to 85.1%. International demand also fell by 0.9%, but excluding the Middle East, it rose by 1.3%. Domestic demand declined by 0.5%, despite a 0.7% increase in capacity.

Regionally, Asia-Pacific remained the largest market, supported by moderate growth, while Latin America and the Caribbean saw the strongest demand increase at 5.3%. However, capacity outpaced demand in most regions, leading to lower load factors, especially in the Middle East, where load factors dropped significantly. Outlook remains cautiously optimistic with a 2% expected growth in available seats for October, albeit amidst concerns about geopolitical instability and reduced consumer purchasing power due to higher energy prices.
