Two Nicosia ophthalmologists plead guilty to negligence causing blindness after cataract surgery
Two ophthalmologists in Nicosia pleaded guilty to reckless and negligent acts after eight patients lost sight in one eye following cataract surgery at a private hospital. The charges were amended to specify that the doctors put human life at risk by reusing a single-use consumable, though this did not change the nature of the charges. The patients contracted a multidrug-resistant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa after surgeries performed in October 2020.
The next hearing is scheduled for October 29, during which the prosecutor will present the admitted facts and the defence will provide mitigating factors. A later date will be set for sentencing.
Families of the affected patients, who attended the hearing with their lawyers, have filed civil claims seeking compensation for the damages caused by the surgeries.
