Turkish side opposes delivery of convergence document in Cyprus talks, Greek Cypriots see it as basis for negotiation restart

The Turkish Cypriot and Turkish sides have objected to receiving a document outlining points of convergence reached in Cyprus negotiations, sources reveal. The Greek Cypriot side, however, considers such a document crucial for resuming talks. The proposal had initially been made by Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, but the Turkish Cypriot side ultimately refused to accept the document when it was sent to the occupied areas.

The President of the Republic offered an alternative to document the divergences between the sides if a convergence record could not be delivered, allowing negotiations to start from identified disagreements. Discussions during the National Council briefing also highlighted that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council support resolving the Cyprus issue based on agreed parameters, and that any new UN Secretary-General will continue following the current mandate.

Regarding demilitarization, the primary contention is over which areas the measure would cover. The Greek Cypriots are ready to proceed with mine clearance in both occupied and free areas as proposed by the UN, whereas the Turkish Cypriot side insists on limiting it to a single area with tanks. Sources further note that the Greek Cypriot side believes Turkey aims to delay the process until the end of the UN Secretary-General’s term.
