Alma leader Odysseas Michaelides Blames Turkey for Cyprus Crossing Points Deadlock
Alma leader Odysseas Michaelides stated on Wednesday that Turkey is the main culprit behind the current impasse over opening new crossing points in Cyprus. Speaking after the National Council meeting, Michaelides urged the Greek Cypriot side to shift international perception away from blaming themselves and highlight Turkey's responsibility for the stalled negotiations.
Michaelides criticized the ongoing negotiations and expressed pessimism about breaking the deadlock, warning that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres might leave the issue unresolved for his successor. He emphasized that unless a new framework for talks is accepted, progress on opening the Mia Milia crossing point, requested by the Turkish Cypriots since 2023, will remain unlikely.
He described the situation as "tragic" and cautioned that Guterres' successor may be reluctant to engage with the Cyprus problem, making it harder to rally international support and effectively benefiting Turkey in maintaining the status quo.
