Turkish Cypriot Evkaf Foundation Criticizes Beer Festival at Historic Zouhouri Mosque Square in Larnaca

The Turkish Cypriot religious endowment foundation Evkaf has voiced disappointment over a beer festival held in the square of the historic Zouhouri mosque complex in Larnaca. Evkaf emphasized the importance of respecting the site's religious significance and noted that local residents had requested the event be relocated.

Evkaf has urged the Larnaca municipality and relevant authorities to consider the cultural and religious character of the monument when planning future events. The Zouhouri mosque complex, which includes the Zouhouri Tekke and Tuzla Hammam, has been recognized as a cultural heritage site and underwent conservation supported by the UN Development Programme.

Conservation work was completed in February 2022, with a completion event held in March 2023. The broader redevelopment of Zouhouri Square, separate from the conservation efforts, was inaugurated by the Larnaca municipality in January 2023.
