Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation Expands Use of EU State Aid Provisions to Ten Articles
Cyprus’ Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) has increased the number of EU state aid provisions it uses from three in 2016 to ten currently, enhancing its ability to fund diverse research and innovation projects. This expansion was highlighted during a meeting between State Aid Control Commissioner Stella Michaelidou and RIF director general Theodoros Loukaidis, where discussions focused on funding scheme design and updates to the EU’s General Block Exemption Regulation (GBER).
RIF now supports a broader range of initiatives including research infrastructure, innovation clusters, professional training, and companies participating in international exhibitions. The GBER framework allows member states to grant certain state aids without prior European Commission approval, enabling faster deployment of funds while ensuring compliance with competition rules.
Both officials emphasized cooperation as key to efficient implementation, with Michaelidou praising RIF as a model for utilizing GBER provisions. They also agreed to enhance knowledge-sharing efforts to further improve the design and execution of state aid measures supporting Cyprus’ innovation ecosystem.
