Local municipalities challenge plans for new €300m central prison near Ayios Sozomenos
The municipalities of South Nicosia-Idalion and Latsia-Yeri have voiced strong opposition to the government’s decision to build a new €300 million central prison complex near the village of Ayios Sozomenos. The two councils, representing nearly 60,000 residents, plan to raise their concerns directly with Justice Minister Costas Fitiris in an upcoming meeting. Their main objections focus on the lack of prior consultation and the selected site’s incompatibility with local land use, as the area is adjacent to an archaeological site and a Natura protected area.
Originally, the government had intended to construct the facility in Mathiatis but canceled those plans after local resistance. Although the new location near Ayios Sozomenos benefits from existing infrastructure, the affected municipalities argue that the land is important for industrial, agricultural, and livestock activities outlined in a national sector rebuilding plan. The new prison is designed to house 1,500 inmates and replace the current outdated facility in Nicosia, with construction scheduled to begin next year and be completed within five years.
