Turkish Cypriot legislature abolishes mixed voting ahead of likely December election
The Turkish Cypriot legislature voted on Tuesday to abolish the mixed voting system ahead of a potential election in December, overriding a veto by leader Tufan Erhurman. The new law passed with 28 votes in favor and 10 against during an extraordinary session, removing the option for voters to select candidates from multiple parties and limiting them to choosing candidates from only one party.
Prime Minister Unal Ustel criticized Erhurman's veto, emphasizing that electoral amendments have been made in the past close to elections and rejecting comparisons to Turkey's election laws. The election date has not been officially set but is expected to coincide with local elections on December 6, with the legislature scheduled to vote on the date next week.
Opposition leader Sila Usar Incirli condemned the changes, calling them politically motivated and stressing that the election should have been held earlier according to popular will. She predicted a landslide victory for her party, the CTP, signaling an end to the UBP's seven-and-a-half-year rule. In contrast, Ustel expressed confidence that the UBP will remain in power following the upcoming election.
