Gender Bias in AI Linked to Under-Representation of Women in Tech, Cyprus Commissioner Warns
Gender Equality Commissioner Josie Christodoulou highlighted at the Cyprus Forum that the under-representation of women in technology risks perpetuating gender bias within artificial intelligence (AI) systems. She stressed that AI inherently reflects the data and social assumptions of its predominantly male developers, reinforcing existing stereotypes.
Christodoulou emphasized that addressing bias in AI must start early, with educational guidance encouraging girls to pursue STEM fields. Cyprus is collaborating with the Education Ministry to train career counselors on equality and unconscious bias to support this initiative. However, retaining women in tech careers remains a challenge, particularly as they balance professional life and family responsibilities.
The Commissioner identified cultural attitudes, starting from early childhood, as the root cause of persistent gender stereotypes. These biases influence how AI systems interpret professions and roles, perpetuating misconceptions. She called for coordinated efforts from governments, the EU, and technology companies to integrate equality into AI development and policies to combat these biases.
