Cyprus Department of Forests urges responsible wild mushroom gathering to protect ecosystems
The Department of Forests in Cyprus has urged the public to gather wild mushrooms responsibly as the picking season begins, emphasizing that careless methods can damage the forest floor and harm fungi. In a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, officials warned against using rakes or combs, which are banned under the Forests Law due to their potential to disturb soil and fungal growth.
Pickers are advised to avoid digging or unnecessarily disturbing the ground, gently moving only the leaf litter needed and replacing it afterward. Only mature mushrooms that can be confidently identified as edible should be collected to ensure continued growth of fungi. The department highlighted the crucial role of leaf litter in retaining moisture, protecting soil, and supporting the forest ecosystem.
The statement stressed that responsible mushroom gathering helps preserve the health of Cyprus’s forests, protecting both fungi and the surrounding environment for future generations. Authorities reminded the public that protecting the forest is a collective responsibility.
