DISY schedules November 14 assembly to select presidential candidate with nominations by October 13
DISY has set its electoral assembly for November 14 to choose its presidential candidate, with nominations due by October 13. Former party leader Averof Neofytou confirmed his candidacy but emphasized he is not running for the sake of running. The party’s Executive Bureau established the timetable, which will be ratified by the Political Bureau on Friday.
Neofytou commented on the potential for a consensus candidate, mentioning Annita Demetriou and Giorgos Pamborides but did not exclude any options. Pamborides has indicated he will decide in the coming days whether to run. Meanwhile, tensions have surfaced within the party, with Neofytou criticizing former President Nicos Anastasiades over comments on DISY’s unclear opposition status, prompting a sharp rebuttal from Anastasiades.
Controversy also arose from a recent dinner involving Neofytou, Demetriou, and Politis publisher Chris Panayiotou, who denied any political agreement was made at the event. Party leadership warned against any candidacies outside official party procedures, with Vice-president Savia Orfanidou calling such moves catastrophic to DISY’s chances in upcoming elections.
