Indian and German diplomats stress solving Cyprus problem key to unlocking island’s strategic potential

Indian High Commissioner Manish and German Chargé d’Affaires Mirko Kruppa highlighted at the Cyprus Forum the critical need to resolve the Cyprus problem to fully leverage the island’s strategic location. Kruppa stated that all energy projects in Cyprus have ceased due to the island’s division, forcing reliance on costlier alternatives and hindering economic benefits.

Kruppa emphasized that a unified Cyprus is essential for regional security cooperation, including potential NATO integration, but acknowledged that EU mechanisms to ensure energy and crisis security are underdeveloped. Indian High Commissioner Manish underscored Cyprus’s importance in emerging economic corridors and praised its rapid economic growth and strong India-Cyprus partnership. However, he noted that the ongoing territorial dispute limits the island’s ability to maximize its geopolitical and economic potential.

Both diplomats called for greater involvement from guarantor powers and the EU to facilitate a resolution. They agreed that Cyprus’s future as an energy and security hub in the Eastern Mediterranean hinges on overcoming internal divisions and establishing stable governance frameworks.
