Diko leader says confidence-building measures not prerequisite for Cyprus peace talks
Diko leader Nicholas Papadopoulos stated that implementing confidence-building measures between the two sides of Cyprus should not be a condition for holding an enlarged meeting on the Cyprus problem. Speaking after the National Council meeting, he emphasized that the Cyprus issue involves not only the communities but also Turkey, security concerns, the occupying army, and territorial return, meaning Turkey's presence is indispensable in negotiations.
Papadopoulos reiterated that Turkey's insistence on changing the talks' basis to a two-state solution is unacceptable to Greek Cypriots. He stressed the need for constructive engagement and proposals backed by EU support to pressure Turkey to resume negotiations.
This contrasts with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and envoy Maria Angela Holguin, who have insisted confidence-building measures are essential prerequisites before convening an enlarged meeting involving Cyprus, the guarantor powers, and the UN.
