DISY leader Annita Demetriou announces bid for presidential nomination amid internal party tensions
DISY leader Annita Demetriou has officially declared her candidacy for the party’s presidential nomination, following former leader Averof Neofytou's earlier announcement and his indication he might run outside party procedures. Demetriou emphasized her responsibility as party president to participate in the selection process, stating that DISY will have a candidate to serve the interests of its members and the country.
Neofytou criticized recent party dynamics, denying claims of blackmail and accusing some officials of disregarding political ethics. Party veterans, including Harris Georgiades, questioned the legitimacy of commitments made outside official party lines. Meanwhile, former President Nicos Anastasiades condemned Neofytou’s announcement, urging unity and dialogue over personal ambition to avoid dividing the party.
The party set a timetable for the nomination process, with internal candidacies due by October 15 and a final vote likely scheduled for November 22, allowing all of DISY’s 43,000 members to participate in selecting the party’s presidential candidate for the first time.
