President Christodoulides says it is too early to start 2028 presidential race
President Nikos Christodoulides stated on Tuesday that it is premature to begin campaigning for the 2028 presidential election, emphasizing that the vote will not occur until February 2028. Speaking at the Cyprus Forum in Nicosia, he acknowledged the right of candidates to announce their runs but stressed that with the election still 17 to 18 months away, it is too soon to engage in electioneering.
His remarks came shortly after Disy party leader Annita Demetriou and former leader Averof Neophytou declared their candidacies for the party’s presidential nomination. Christodoulides highlighted the current focus on governance, noting that Cyprus faces significant challenges that require cooperation between the executive and legislature to address.
Christodoulides compared the situation to other parliamentary democracies where election campaigns typically begin much later in a government's term. He reiterated his belief that initiating election discussions at this stage is premature, while respecting every citizen's right to participate in the democratic process.
