ICS highlights freedom of navigation and regulatory predictability in Washington talks with US officials
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) delegation led by Secretary General Thomas Kazakos emphasized freedom of navigation and the need for a predictable global regulatory framework during meetings with senior US officials in Washington. Discussions involved key topics such as the IMO Net Zero Framework, the suspended USTR Section 301 fees on Chinese-linked and foreign vessels, and the SHIPS for America Act. The delegation met representatives from the Department of State, the US Coast Guard, and US Senator Mark Kelly's office.
The ICS also engaged with the Consultative Shipping Group (CSG), co-hosting a meeting with US Maritime Administration officials and attended by Federal Maritime Commission Chair Laura Di Bella. Kazakhstan highlighted the importance of freedom of navigation alongside trade and decarbonization policies shaping the maritime sector’s future.
The ICS organized a reception at the German Embassy to thank CSG members and the Chamber of Shipping of America for their collaborative efforts in facilitating the meetings, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to fostering international cooperation in maritime governance and trade regulation.
