Nicosia and Limassol mayors jointly propose tram systems despite Transport Ministry reservations

For the first time, the mayors of Nicosia and Limassol, Charalambos Prountzos and Yiannis Armeftis, are exploring the introduction of tram systems in their cities. They have requested assistance from the Transport Ministry, which currently appears skeptical about the project’s feasibility, citing concerns that the European Investment Bank would be unlikely to fund it due to low bus ridership.

Mayor Prountzos disagrees with the ministry's assessment, pointing out that buses have been in operation for nearly 17 years without achieving the expected passenger numbers. He emphasizes that bus services would continue alongside any new tram system, proposing trams as a fixed-track public transport option to revitalize the sector and address broader issues such as environmental emissions.

An update to a previous study on trams is being requested by Nicosia Municipality, and the matter was discussed recently between the mayors and the ministry. Earlier, former Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades expressed doubts about the sustainability and financial viability of trams, suggesting the focus should be on increasing bus ridership to support such developments.
