President Christodoulides denies deadlock in Cyprus reunification talks amid challenges

President Nikos Christodoulides stated on Tuesday that efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem are ongoing and not at a deadlock, despite significant difficulties and challenges. Addressing concerns after UN Secretary-General’s envoy Maria Angela Holguin remarked that a favourable opportunity for resolution was slipping away, Christodoulides emphasized that negotiations continue with active support from the UN and the European Union.

Christodoulides highlighted that the Greek Cypriot side is cooperating with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres by proposing creative ideas on methodology, substance, and confidence-building measures, which have received positive reception. While acknowledging the Turkish side's stance favoring a two-state solution, the president affirmed that work is progressing with specific actions rather than words.

Looking ahead, Christodoulides noted that Holguin will soon visit Cyprus, and ongoing EU involvement includes special envoy Johannes Hahn’s engagement with Turkey. The president expressed optimism about upcoming developments, reassuring that the goal of reunification remains the focus amid continuing negotiations and diplomatic efforts.
