No joint Cyprus peace meeting as Turkish Cypriot leader declines proposal amid Ankara’s directives

A planned trilateral meeting involving UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman did not take place after Erhurman declined the invitation. President Christodoulides proposed the meeting, and the UN Secretary-General was ready to convene it, but Erhurman cited no interest, following clear instructions from Ankara to avoid progress on the Cyprus issue without recognition of sovereign equality.

María Ángela Holguín, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, confirmed that despite initial absence of a trilateral meeting plan, the Turkish Cypriot side was unwilling to participate. Holguín emphasized that Guterres remains committed to advancing efforts before the end of his term in December, aiming to leave a constructive framework for his successor. The UN has compiled documented convergences between the two sides and will soon invite them to submit proposals on negotiation methodology.

Observers note that the rejection of the meeting reflects Ankara’s rigid stance, which continues to stall progress. The opportunity to engage all parties during their recent presence in New York was missed, underscoring ongoing challenges in resolving the Cyprus dispute.
