Cyprus launches MEDCONNECT project to restore Mediterranean marine and coastal ecosystems

Cyprus is hosting the official launch of MEDCONNECT, an EU-funded project led by the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute aimed at restoring marine and coastal ecosystems in the Mediterranean. The three-year initiative, funded by the EU Horizon Europe program with a budget of €3.5 million, will test 15 innovative solutions to enhance ecosystem restoration, reduce pollution, and improve the resilience of Mediterranean waters.

The launch event took place on September 29 in Limassol, gathering representatives from the Cyprus government, European institutions, project partners, and the blue economy community. MEDCONNECT will operate through a network of regional and national hubs and living labs, enabling collaboration among researchers, businesses, public bodies, and local communities to test solutions under real coastal conditions.

Part of the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters,” MEDCONNECT aims to foster cooperation across 15 countries, mobilize investments, and scale successful solutions regionally. The project will also develop a digital monitoring framework integrating European data with citizen science to enhance environmental monitoring and public participation in protecting Mediterranean marine ecosystems.
