Investigation finds well-founded allegations against POEP official recommending police probe

A sports ethics investigation into a Pancyprian Amateur Boxing Federation (POEP) official has found well-founded allegations of control over four affiliated clubs, some potentially fictitious. The official is suspected of improper practices, ties to these clubs, and document forgery, according to a report by the Sports Ethics and Protection Committee (EDPA).

The investigation began following an anonymous complaint in summer 2025, which alleged the official exercised dominant control over clubs linked to him and relatives, all operating from the same premises in a Nicosia suburb. The EDPA report was submitted to the Attorney General in September, who will decide on police involvement.

The findings highlight issues including sham clubs, coaches linked to the official registered improperly, and possible breaches of sports competition laws. This case follows ongoing legal actions against other football officials for conflicts of interest and money laundering, underscoring heightened scrutiny of sports governance in Cyprus.
