Timur Turlov Elected First Kazakh President of International Chess Federation FIDE

Timur Turlov has been elected President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for a four-year term until 2030, making history as the first Kazakh national to lead the global chess organization. The election took place during the FIDE General Assembly in Samarkand and saw Turlov win a second-round runoff vote while running alongside five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand as Deputy President.

Turlov, founder and CEO of Nasdaq-listed Freedom Holding Corp., brings extensive experience in digital transformation and financial services. His agenda for FIDE focuses on modernization, digitalization, and professionalization, including a unified platform for players and modern infrastructure for national federations. His campaign includes a pledge of more than $8.5 million toward development funds and structural reforms aimed at expanding chess worldwide.

The election also highlights growing chess activity in Cyprus, where Freedom24, part of Turlov’s Freedom Holding Corp., supports the Cyprus Chess Federation. Since 2023, Cyprus has hosted numerous major tournaments and launched a chess academy promoting the sport among local youth. Turlov aims to increase FIDE’s global influence and integrate chess further into educational systems.
