Police question 27 individuals over social media posts violating election campaign ban in Cyprus

Cyprus police have begun questioning 27 people over more than 100 social media posts and advertisements allegedly linked to May's parliamentary elections, which were published during the election campaign ban period. The investigation follows 127 complaints regarding paid and unpaid election-related content posted on the eve of the election or polling day, a violation of Article 63(b) of the election law.

Among those questioned is Theano Kalavana, president of Opek, whose summons to police drew notable attention. Police clarified that the law applies equally to candidates and ordinary citizens, focusing on whether content has a direct or indirect connection with the elections. The Press and Information Office monitored social media during the elections and forwarded findings to the interior ministry, which referred them to the attorney-general's office.

The attorney-general instructed the police to investigate potential criminal offenses punishable by up to one year in prison or a fine of €5,000. Cases will be further handled following interrogation, with authorities refraining from disclosing political affiliations of those involved. Separate personal data complaints are being addressed by the commissioner for personal data protection.
