Turkish Cypriot Leader Rejects Rotating Presidency Talks as Confidence-Building Measure

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman has refused to discuss the rotating presidency as a confidence-building measure, emphasizing it as a matter of political equality. This stance came after the UN envoy María Ángela Holguín linked a potential compromise on the rotating presidency with a trilateral meeting proposal requested by Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. Erhurman stated that the rotating presidency cannot be separated from core political equality issues and should not be used as a bargaining chip.

Erhurman also dismissed Christodoulides’ 19-point proposal, insisting that talks should focus on the original seven points outlined by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He accused the Greek Cypriot side of attempting to dilute already established proposals. While denying rejection of a UN-driven trilateral meeting, Erhurman clarified that the proposal was made by Christodoulides, not the UN, and noted no progress had been made on Guterres' points during recent discussions in New York.

Highlighting ongoing tensions, Erhurman listed multiple actions by the Greek Cypriot side that he believed undermined trust during his tenure, including diplomatic obstacles and cultural event cancellations. Despite disagreements, he affirmed his commitment to the negotiation process, emphasizing the need for substantive progress rather than frequent meetings for appearances.
