Government presents improved pay proposal to hourly-paid public sector unions for decision
The Cypriot government has introduced an improved proposal addressing the ongoing dispute with hourly-paid public sector workers, which will now be put to the employees for approval. Finance Minister Makis Keravnos confirmed the offer, described as an advancement over previous ones, following a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides and union representatives from SEK, PEO, and Deok. While the contents of the proposal, including any pay increase details, remain undisclosed, Keravnos expressed hope for a resolution through continued dialogue.
Union leaders welcomed the improved proposal and emphasized that the final decision rests with their members. PEO representative Stavros Andreou described the talks as constructive and said the offer addresses workers' demands to some extent. SEK and Deok officials also acknowledged the progress, underscoring the importance of respecting the negotiation process to reach an agreement satisfactory to all parties involved.
The unions plan to present the new offer to their respective workers’ assemblies for discussion. Both sides have reaffirmed their commitment to social dialogue, aiming to find common ground and avoid escalation of the dispute.
