Athienou bread and loukoumi advance towards EU Protected Geographical Indication status

Cyprus has taken a significant step toward securing European protected status for two of Athienou's traditional products, its bread and loukoumi. On September 25, the agriculture department formally submitted applications for "Athienitiko Psomi" and "Athienitiko Loukoumi" to be registered as Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) to the European Commission. These submissions followed a successful national examination and approval by the agriculture department director.

The applications detail the unique characteristics of Athienou bread, highlighting its dense crumb, thick crunchy crust, and large size, alongside the traditional production methods confined within Athienou municipality. The bread’s history, stretching back over a century with archaeological evidence linking bread-making to the area, strengthens the case. Both products are recognised locally for their exceptional quality and contribute to Athienou’s cultural heritage.

The European Commission will now evaluate the applications, with a favourable decision anticipated by 2027. If approved, these designations will grant Athienou bread and loukoumi protected status under the EU’s geographical indication system, enhancing their reputation and safeguarding their authenticity across Europe.
