Bicommunal Committee launches restoration of historic church and mosque in Cyprus funded by EU

The bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage has initiated conservation efforts at the 15th-century Panayia Melandrina church in Kalogrea, Kyrenia district, and the Kato Arodes mosque in Paphos district. Temporary emergency works conducted in 2014 to stabilize the church have reached their limits, prompting comprehensive architectural studies and substantial restoration to preserve its structural integrity.

Both projects are financed by the European Union and overseen by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In addition to these efforts, conservation work has been completed at Ayios Georgios church and the community cemetery in Vokolida, Karpasia peninsula.

Greek Cypriot co-chair of the committee, Sotos Ktoris, emphasized that these restoration projects serve to protect the island's cultural heritage and exemplify meaningful cooperation between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.
