EU-Funded OpenAgri Project Develops Trusted Open-Source Digital Tools for Farmers

The EU-funded OpenAgri initiative is developing open-source digital tools to support farmers in tackling crop disease, irrigation, and connectivity challenges. By providing evidence-based comparisons of agricultural technologies through a free Decision Support Tool (DST), the project aims to build trust and help farmers select solutions suited to their specific conditions. The tool assesses factors including internet reliability, energy use, cost, and practicality under real-world farming scenarios.

OpenAgri involves farmers, advisers, and tech companies across seven European countries, focusing on interoperability and usability. The project offers modular, Lego-like components that can be combined and adapted to local needs, allowing integration of weather data, pest risk assessment, irrigation calculations, and automated reporting. Pilot farms in Greece, France, Belgium, Poland, and Cyprus test and validate these technologies.

The initiative tackles rural connectivity issues by developing solutions capable of operating offline or with limited internet access. By increasing transparency and interoperability, OpenAgri also supports policymakers in identifying infrastructure needs and facilitates a smoother digital transition across European agriculture. The project highlights the importance of trust and demonstrable benefits for farmers when adopting new digital tools.
