UN Personal Envoy reports Turkish Cypriot leader declined planned trilateral meeting in New York
The Turkish Cypriot leader did not consider it appropriate to hold a trilateral meeting with the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Republic, despite the Greek Cypriot leader's proposal for such a meeting this week in New York. This was confirmed by Maria Angelou Olgin, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, who has been actively facilitating dialogue between the two sides.
Olgin also revealed that the UN has completed a mapping of convergences, which will be made available to both parties once negotiations commence. She emphasized the urgent need for both leaders to implement agreed confidence-building measures, highlighting that such cooperation would demonstrate their willingness to pursue a sustainable solution.
The Personal Envoy stated she will continue her facilitation efforts until the end of December and plans to visit Cyprus in October to encourage the creation of an environment conducive to restarting negotiations. Despite separate meetings with both leaders during the UN General Assembly's High-Level Week, the trilateral meeting remains pending based on the Turkish Cypriot leader’s current stance.
