Funding delay stalls neutering of 70 cats at central prisons in Cyprus
Plans to neuter around 70 cats living at Cyprus's central prisons have been delayed due to the lack of €5,000 funding needed for the procedure, the Animal Party announced on Sunday. Despite having secured necessary permissions and coordinating with relevant authorities, the project cannot proceed without this financial support.
The Animal Party criticized what it described as excessive state bureaucracy, noting that the relatively small cost is preventing an otherwise ready-to-implement neutering program. They emphasized that neutering would control the cat population, prevent unchecked breeding, and improve animal welfare within the prison environment.
Calling for a legal and transparent funding mechanism, the party urged President Nikos Christodoulides to intervene and encourage the relevant departments to resolve the issue promptly. The party also highlighted the contradiction in state policies that acknowledge the need for stray animal control yet fail to fund targeted initiatives.
