Bicommunal Cylingo project documents 2,000+ shared words in Greek and Turkish Cypriot dialects

A joint digital initiative named Cylingo has successfully documented over 2,000 words common to both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot dialects, highlighting the island's shared linguistic heritage. Founded by childhood friends Doruk Ekingen and Ugurcan Karsili, the platform uses online dictionaries, games, and AI tools to preserve these dialects, many of which have been overlooked due to decades of division.

The project began after the founders realized a lack of accessible Cypriot language resources and has since grown to include research drawn directly from elderly speakers and previous academic studies. Cylingo carefully filters submissions to ensure words are uniquely Cypriot, distinct from standard Greek or Turkish. Alongside vocabulary, the platform offers pronunciation guides and plans to implement AI capable of accurately interpreting the dialects.

Experts note that while Cypriot Greek is relatively well-documented, Cypriot Turkish faces greater challenges due to historical and educational factors. The initiative aims to not only preserve language but to foster cultural identity against pressures of homogenization. Cylingo remains a dynamic community project, encouraging public contributions to aid in keeping Cyprus’s linguistic traditions alive for future generations.
