Cyprus to upgrade ageing AMX-30 tanks amid no replacement alternatives

Cyprus will proceed with upgrading its aging AMX-30 battle tanks, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas confirmed on Friday, citing the absence of alternative replacement options. The modernization program includes fitting the tanks with thermal cameras at a projected cost of €25 million, despite reports suggesting a classified recommendation to withdraw the vehicles. Palmas stressed that the upgrades are necessary to meet the National Guard’s operational requirements until a new tank fleet can be acquired.

The National Guard has operated the French-designed AMX-30 tanks since the late 1980s, supplemented by refurbished units from the Greek army. Alongside AMX-30s, the force also uses Russian-designed T-80 tanks. Palmas rejected claims that the decision was made unilaterally, explaining that procurement follows procedures involving various defense bodies and requires parliamentary approval of funding.

The defense budget is set to rise sharply in 2027, with allocations increasing from €176.8 million in 2026 to €430.15 million the following year. Palmas emphasized that Cyprus’s continued occupation necessitates strengthening its deterrent capabilities to defend the country effectively.
