Cyprus ministers agree on measures to improve prisoner healthcare and forensic services
Cyprus Justice Minister Costas Fitiris and Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides have agreed on a series of measures to address delays in treating prisoners at public hospitals and enhance forensic medicine services. Key initiatives include introducing special arrangements in accident and emergency departments for prisoners, prioritizing their examinations, and reserving parking for police vehicles transporting prisoners. Additionally, specially adapted holding areas will be created inside hospitals to reduce waiting times.
Legislation governing psychiatric hospitalisation will be amended to simplify procedures for transporting and admitting patients requiring psychiatric assessment. To strengthen forensic medicine, additional staff will be hired while external services will be engaged. The operating protocol will be updated to clarify procedures for police and forensic pathologists. Moreover, regional morgues outside Nicosia, starting with Limassol, will gradually reopen to ease the burden on the capital's facilities.
Delays in investigations of alleged medical negligence were also discussed, with plans for the health ministry to compile a list of specialist doctors for police expert selection. Officials from the justice and health ministries, the state health services organisation Okypy, and police leadership attended the meeting, with a follow-up session planned to assess progress.
