Cyprus to implement Entry/Exit System next March amid sharp drop in irregular migration
Cyprus is set to install the Entry/Exit System (EES) by March 2027, aiming to electronically record entries and exits of non-EU nationals. The system will replace manual passport stamping and is hoped to improve data sharing and border control.
Recent statistics indicate a significant reduction in irregular migration, with 968 irregular arrivals from January to August 2026 compared to 11,920 during the same period in 2022. New asylum applications have also fallen sharply from over 15,000 in early 2022 to just over 1,100 this year, while pending cases have dropped from nearly 24,000 in 2024 to about 13,000.
Authorities have upgraded IT systems to enhance tracking and coordination, facilitating improved monitoring of foreign nationals. The Deputy Minister of Migration emphasized the transition of migration from a challenge to an opportunity to meet labor market needs. Cyprus continues to prepare for Schengen integration with ongoing police operations and expects further assessment visits from Austrian officials.
