Nicosia Municipality Rejects Traders' Claims Over Ledra and Onasagorou Streets Redevelopment
The Nicosia municipality has dismissed allegations from a committee of traders and residents regarding the redevelopment of Ledra and Onasagorou streets, calling claims against Mayor Charalambos Prountzos and municipal staff "inaccurate". The committee had accused the mayor of mishandling public consultations and questioned a contract with consultancy firm PwC, alleging it aimed to undermine small businesses and residents.
The municipality emphasized its commitment to dialogue, noting it held multiple meetings with store representatives and affected groups. It outlined the steps taken to inform stakeholders about the renovation project, which secured €10.8 million through the Green Line revitalization programme funded by the interior ministry to restore neglected areas of Nicosia.
The project, inspired by the EU's New European Bauhaus principles, involves phased restoration including facades, upcoming construction, and road redesign. Despite the municipality's assurances, some affected groups remain concerned about insufficient funding and exclusions of certain side streets from the redevelopment plans.
