Cyprus boosts investment in mountain and rural tourism to enhance year-round visitor appeal

Cyprus is significantly increasing investment in mountain and rural tourism, aiming to attract more visitors inland and support local communities, Deputy Tourism Minister Kostas Koumis announced. The initiative focuses on strengthening the island’s appeal as a year-round destination by promoting nature, outdoor activities, and authentic rural experiences.

The government is collaborating with the Forestry Department to enhance walking and cycling routes, while introducing national standards for hiking trail design, construction, and management. Aligning with European standards, Cyprus is working towards certifying long-distance and day hiking trails within the Troodos Geopark.

Complementing infrastructure improvements, the strategy integrates tourism with local businesses, traditional products, and cultural events to ensure economic benefits for mountain communities. Over €15 million in funding has supported projects for rural revival, accommodation, and local food-related businesses, contributing to sustainable development and encouraging younger populations to remain or return to these areas.
