Villagers protest and seek court injunction against asphalt plant in Mitsero over environmental concerns

Representatives and residents from Mitsero and seven nearby villages demonstrated outside the Supreme Court on Thursday, opposing the construction of an asphalt plant in Mitsero. Meanwhile, the court deliberated on a legal appeal calling for a temporary halt to all work at the site pending the outcome of an appeal against the plant’s planning permission. The court reserved its decision on the temporary injunction and set the hearing for October 5.

Villagers' lawyer Natasa Iacovou emphasized the need for a temporary work stoppage due to environmental risks cited in the project's impact study, including hazardous substance leakage, noise, and odors. She argued that ongoing construction threatens residents' health and risks undermining the judicial process. Conversely, the state’s lawyer labeled the villagers' claims as lacking legal basis, insisting the work is authorized and legally conducted.

Protests involved residents from eight villages fearing environmental harm, with community leaders voicing strong opposition. Agrokipia leader Sotiris Kyriacou expressed outrage at the continuation of work, and Meniko leader Andreas Kalogyrou warned that the asphalt plant would severely damage the region’s environment and well-being.
