Cyprus Transport Minister Opposes Traffic Changes on Makariou Avenue Risking EU Funding Return
Cyprus Transport Minister Evi Tsolaki has expressed opposition to any modifications of the traffic regulations on Makariou Avenue that could lead to the return of European Union funds. This stance was conveyed during a parliamentary transport committee meeting by Evi Anayiotou, head of the ministry’s Sustainable Mobility Division, following discussions with the Minister.
The Ministry awaits a study by the Nicosia Municipality on proposed changes and plans to evaluate specific proposals carefully. Nicosia Mayor Charalampos Proutsos confirmed the completion of this study, emphasizing the importance of proceeding with changes without violating the terms of EU funding. The mayor also highlighted that the municipality aims to minimize financial risks associated with potential funding recovery by the European Union.
Concerns were raised by officials from various sectors about the impact of current traffic arrangements, the economic decline of the commercial area, and the importance of integrating Makariou Avenue’s traffic measures into a broader sustainable urban mobility strategy. Representatives called for balanced solutions that improve accessibility while safeguarding the city’s economic vitality and compliance with EU financial conditions.
