Cyprus’ history and hope symbolised in new sculpture unveiled in Protaras

The sculpture “Cyprus’ journey through the ages” by renowned Cypriot sculptor Philippos Yiapanis was unveiled on September 19 along the Protaras coastal promenade. The artwork depicts Cyprus’s long history and highlights the enduring bonds between Cypriot Hellenism and Greece. Positioned to overlook occupied Famagusta and ancient Salamis, the sculpture serves as a poignant symbol of remembrance, historical continuity and hope for reunification.

Donated by the family of Chrysostomos and Katerina Papavassiliou and installed with support from the Municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia, the sculpture was unveiled under the auspices of the Deputy Ministry of Culture. Papavassiliou, chairman of Island Oil Holdings, described the piece as “half a boat, half an occupied Cyprus,” representing “a journey that remains unfinished” and a cry for those lost or displaced.

The donation aims to contribute to the fight against oblivion and express hope for a peaceful reunification of Cyprus respecting cultural heritage and European values. Thanks were extended to Yiapanis, local officials and all involved in the completion and unveiling ceremony, celebrating a new cultural landmark for residents and visitors alike.
