European Defence Readiness Emphasizes Strategic Adaptability and Joint Procurement Initiatives
Lieutenant-General Emmanouel Theodorou, Chief of the National Guard, emphasized the need for a comprehensive European defence readiness strategy that addresses security challenges across all strategic regions. Speaking at the European Chiefs of Defence and National Armaments Directors conference in Rome, he highlighted the importance of reducing the time from design to operational deployment of defence systems and ensuring military capabilities are adaptable and interoperable.
The conference focused on aligning European defence industrial production with evolving military requirements. This aligns with the EU's Readiness 2030 plans, including the €150 billion Security Action for Europe (Safe) instrument, which promotes joint procurement of ammunition, missiles, air defence, and ground combat systems. The scheme aims to enhance interoperability, reduce costs, and strengthen the European defence industrial base, while requiring that at least 65% of components originate within the EU or eligible associated countries.
Cyprus has been allocated €1.2 billion under Safe, receiving an initial payment of €177.2 million to boost defence investments and upgrade military capabilities. On the sidelines of the Rome conference, Theodorou also engaged in discussions with defence counterparts to address mutual strategic concerns, reinforcing coordination among European military leadership.
