Cyprus and China Reinforce Maritime Cooperation with Focus on Seafarers and Education
Cyprus and China have renewed their focus on maritime cooperation during a meeting between Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis and China’s new ambassador Yang Yundong. Key topics included the wellbeing of seafarers, maritime education, and coordination at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). This comes ahead of Hadjimanolis’s planned visit to China to further discuss bilateral cooperation.
The two officials reviewed the longstanding maritime agreement signed in 1990 and its subsequent amendment in 2003, highlighting opportunities for deeper collaboration, especially in maritime workforce training. Both sides emphasized the importance of multilateral decision-making at the IMO, addressing issues such as safety, security, environmental protection, and decarbonisation.
Ambassador Yang, who presented his credentials to Cyprus’ President in early July, continues engaging with government officials to strengthen relations. Shipping remains a core area of cooperation between the countries, reaffirmed in their recent discussions aimed at expanding mutual maritime interests.
