Direct Democracy app fined €6,000 for personal data breaches in Cyprus

Fidias Panayiotou’s Direct Democracy app and its online platform 'Agora' have been fined €6,000 for violating personal data regulations, Cyprus' personal data commissioner Maria Christofidou announced. The penalty follows Panayiotou's failure to comply with official demands to temporarily suspend the platform’s operations, which collect and process personal data.

The commissioner highlighted that Panayiotou obstructed the authority’s investigation by providing incomplete and fragmented responses. Despite multiple clear requests from the data authority, Panayiotou did not fully cooperate or supply consistent information in a timely manner, delaying the supervisory process.

Additionally, Panayiotou publicly refused to suspend the platform, further demonstrating a lack of willingness to comply. The commissioner's decision emphasized the importance of adherence to data protection regulations and full cooperation during investigations to ensure users’ personal data security.
