Cyprus Ecologists Call to End British Bases' Military Role Over Security Concerns

The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation has urged an end to the involvement of British bases in Cyprus in military operations, citing threats to the safety of Cypriots. The party expressed concern over reports that the bases have been used in the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthis, particularly after Britain deployed an RAF Voyager aircraft from Akrotiri to assist Saudi Arabia in air-to-air refuelling missions.

The Ecologists also opposed plans to install 68 new antennas at Merras in Akrotiri, describing them as spy devices, and voiced support for protests by Kourion Municipality and local residents. They have reached out to the Green Party of England and Wales to raise two key issues in the British House of Commons: the presence of the bases as a colonial relic and their use for offensive military actions.

These concerns come after Akrotiri experienced its first drone strike in March, and amid growing local opposition, including legal action, against expanding military infrastructure at the site. The party’s call highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the strategic use of British sovereign bases on Cyprus.
