Cyprus, Greece and Egypt strengthen defence cooperation to protect Eastern Mediterranean energy infrastructure

Cyprus, Greece, and Egypt have agreed to enhance joint protection of gas fields, supply lines, and offshore energy infrastructure in the Eastern Mediterranean amid rising security concerns. The agreement was reached during the sixth trilateral meeting of the defence ministers in Cairo, where they signed a joint statement focusing on safeguarding critical energy assets against emerging threats.

The ministers committed to deepening military cooperation, intensifying communication, and coordinating capabilities to provide a rapid, unified response to security challenges. They also emphasized respect for international law, including the UN Charter and the Law of the Sea, and the importance of keeping their cooperation free from external competition or polarisation.

In addition to energy security, the talks addressed cross-border threats such as terrorism, smuggling, and human trafficking. The defence ministers welcomed previous joint exercises like Medusa, which improved operational coordination. The next trilateral defence meeting is scheduled to be held in Greece in 2027.
