Domestic and gender violence cases surge, straining Women’s House resources in Cyprus
The Women’s House in Cyprus is facing growing operational challenges due to a rise in domestic and gender violence cases, MPs were informed during a recent visit. In 2026 alone, the facility responded to 5,728 pleas for help, with 1,317 involving domestic violence, significantly impacting funding, human resources, and infrastructure.
Andri Andronikou, scientific director of the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family (Spavo), highlighted issues such as funding shortages, delays in hiring specialized staff, and judicial slowdowns that hinder case closures. She stressed the importance of developing housing policies for victims and improving their access to the labor market to promote financial and social independence.
Plans are underway to expand victim support centers, including a new reception center to open in Larnaca by February 2027. In 2025, Spavo’s helpline handled 5,728 calls, and the Women’s House recorded 374 cases, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced support structures across Cyprus.
