Cyprus Defence Ministry labels low-temperature army meals as isolated case amid Audit Office review
The Cyprus Defence Ministry has described findings of ready-made army meals served at unsafe low temperatures as an "isolated case," responding to concerns raised in an Audit Office report. The report, based on inspections and input from over 1,100 soldiers, highlighted meals delivered within the 5°C to 58°C "danger zone" where bacterial growth can occur, raising food safety questions.
Defence Ministry spokesman Sofianos Filippedes said the ministry is reviewing the findings in cooperation with relevant authorities, emphasizing ongoing monitoring under food safety protocols and the HACCP system. Discrepancies in meal orders and food waste identified by the Audit Office are also under investigation, with new computerized systems being implemented to improve monitoring.
The report also noted that many soldiers avoid provided meals, opting for canteen products or outside food, citing quality and menu design issues. The ministry confirmed it is evaluating soldiers' feedback and addressing special dietary needs. Reports of mild health problems attributed to the food were not formally submitted through official complaint channels and thus remain unverified.
