Presidential Commissioner Marios Hartsiotis assigned police guard amid security review in Cyprus
Presidential Commissioner Marios Hartsiotis will receive a police escort starting 24 September, according to a document signed by deputy police chief Marios Agiotis. The escort includes a police lieutenant and officer as driver and escort, a request reportedly made by Hartsiotis himself and approved by the presidential palace. This development follows an ongoing audit investigating his use of a state limousine for personal trips to his home in Limassol.
The assignment of protection for Hartsiotis comes a day after the justice ministry announced the withdrawal of police guards from three former House presidents and two former first ladies, citing updated risk assessments. The justice ministry emphasized that the changes are based solely on security risk evaluations and are unrelated to the individuals’ official status.
This security overhaul follows a directive from Justice Minister Costas Fitiris after Cyprus’s May parliamentary elections, transferring responsibility for security risk assessments from the cabinet to the police. Protective details are now reassessed biannually or as needed, reflecting a shift from previous practices established since the 1970s. Other political figures and officials have also seen adjustments in their security provisions under the new system.
