Deneia farmers persist in buffer zone despite repeated Turkish attempts to remove them

Farmers from Deneia, escorted by UN peacekeepers, continued cultivating their fields in the buffer zone on Wednesday despite attempts by two Turkish uniformed personnel to remove them. Community leader Charalambos Alexandrou reported that such incidents have occurred two to three times weekly over the past two months. Unlike previous occasions where farmers withdrew to avoid tension, this time they stayed until finishing their work.

The Turkish personnel, one in military uniform and the other in blue, arrived claiming a 1998 map showed the farmers were encroaching on territory. Although UNFICYP personnel intervened and asked the Turkish forces to leave, they declined, and the peacekeepers stated they lacked the authority or means to enforce removal. Alexandrou expressed dissatisfaction with the UN’s limited response and urged for stronger action.

Farmers must regularly access the fields for ploughing, harvesting, and sowing preparation, requiring multiple visits. The incident was reported to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Guard, with assurances that necessary measures would be taken to support the farmers’ rights in the area.
