Cyprus President Christodoulides condemns Erdogan's stance on Cyprus at UN General Assembly
President Nikos Christodoulides of Cyprus accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of ‘‘hypocrisy of the highest form’’ during his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York. Christodoulides highlighted that Erdogan’s recent appeals to international law and sovereignty starkly contradict Turkey’s actions in Cyprus, where over a third of the Republic’s territory remains under illegal Turkish occupation since 1974.
Christodoulides urged a resumption of UN-backed negotiations based on the 2017 framework toward a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, emphasizing that such a settlement should reunify the country and ensure peace and prosperity for all communities. He criticized selective application of UN resolutions and called on Erdogan to provide a green light for substantive talks, while denouncing ongoing human rights abuses and demographic changes under Turkish control.
Highlighting Cyprus’s active regional role, Christodoulides outlined the island’s contributions to humanitarian aid, crisis management, and regional cooperation, including initiatives like the Amalthea Maritime Humanitarian Corridor and climate change partnerships. He praised the ability of small states to lead multilateral efforts, noting Cyprus’s presidency of the EU Council and support for adaptation of international institutions to current global challenges.
